Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog
A DIY Tails costume is easy to make from clothes: a yellow or orange hoodie and joggers, two stuffed tails pinned on behind, white gloves and red shoes with white straps. Add a white chest patch and a tuft of hair on your forehead, and the twin-tailed fox is unmistakable. It costs about $14 and takes about 75 minutes, with no sewing.

- Some cutting
What you need
- A yellow or orange hoodie and joggers
- Two pairs of orange or yellow tights, or long socks, plus newspaper or pillow stuffing
- White felt or card for the tail tips and chest patch
- White gloves
- Red trainers, plus white tape or card for the straps
- Orange card for the forehead tuft and a headband
- Large safety pins and fabric glue
How to make it
- 1
Stuff each pair of tights firmly with newspaper to make two fat tails about 50 cm long. Tie off the open ends with string.
- 2
Cut two white felt tips and glue them to the ends of the tails so each tail has a white end.
- 3
Pin both tails to the back of your joggers at the waistband with large safety pins, side by side, so they sit apart and swing a little as you walk.
- 4
Cut an oval of white felt or card and stick it on the front of the hoodie as the chest patch.
- 5
Cut a small curved tuft from orange card, tape it to a headband and wear it so it sits on your forehead.
- 6
Put on the white gloves. Wrap white tape or card across the front of the red trainers to make the white straps.
- 7
Put on the hoodie and stand with your hands on your hips in a confident pose.
Make it better
- Pin the tails on before you put on the hoodie. They stay put better when the pins are through the joggers.
- Spin round now and then. Two tails look best when they swing out.
- Keep the colour simple: one warm orange for the body, white for the details.
Questions
How do I make a Tails costume from clothes I already own?
Wear a yellow or orange hoodie and joggers, then add two stuffed tights tails, white gloves and red shoes. The two tails are what make it read as Tails.
How do I make the two tails stay on?
Stuff them firmly and pin each one to the waistband of your joggers with two large safety pins. Pin through the joggers, not the hoodie.
Is this an official Tails costume?
No. It is a homemade, unofficial costume made from everyday clothes. We are not affiliated with the makers of the character.
Is this easy fancy dress for a party?
Yes. It is a hoodie, joggers and two stuffed tails, so it is comfortable and quick to put on. Unpin the tails to sit down.
Unofficial. Tails and the Sonic the Hedgehog names belong to their respective owners, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by them. The names are used only to describe this homemade parody costume.
Wear it in front of your own haunted CCTV
Upload four photos of your house and Cursed Cam turns them into a night-time security monitor where something is very wrong. Put it on the TV by the door.
