Olaf from Frozen
A DIY Olaf costume is easy to build from white clothes you already own plus a few card and felt extras. You need a white top and trousers, three big black buttons down the middle, a carrot nose cut from orange card and two twig arms from the garden. It costs about $14, takes an hour, and works as fancy dress for kids and adults.
- TIME
- 60 min
- COST
- about $14
- SKILL
- Some cutting
What you need
- A white long-sleeved top and white trousers or leggings (yours, or from a charity shop)
- A small cushion or a bag of scrunched newspaper for the round belly
- Black felt or card for three big buttons
- Orange card for the carrot nose, plus a length of elastic
- Two long twigs for arms, and three short ones for the hair
- A white beanie or hood
- Brown tape or brown paper for the hands and feet
- Double-sided tape or safety pins
How to make it
- 1
Put on the white top and trousers. Tuck the cushion under the top so your middle looks round and soft.
- 2
Cut three circles about 6 cm wide from the black felt or card. Stick them in a line down the front with double-sided tape or safety pins, evenly spaced.
- 3
Roll a sheet of orange card into a cone about 12 cm long, tape the seam, and pierce a hole each side of the wide end. Thread elastic through and tie it so the nose sits on your face.
- 4
Push the three short twigs into the top of the beanie, or tape them inside it, so they stick up in a little tuft.
- 5
Choose two straight twigs about as long as your forearms. Wrap brown tape round one end of each, then tape each twig inside a sleeve so it pokes out past your hand like a stick arm.
- 6
Wrap brown paper round the toes of your shoes, or wear brown socks over them, to make the feet.
- 7
Add a wide smile with a black eyeliner pencil or face paint if you want one, then walk with small, bouncy steps.
Make it better
- Pick twigs that are dry and smooth, and sand any splinters off the ends.
- Keep the nose cone light so the elastic does not dig in. Thin card is plenty.
- Everything on the front is stuck on with tape or pins, so you can take the buttons off and wash the top afterwards.
Questions
How do I make an Olaf costume from clothes I already own?
Wear all white, add a cushion for the round belly and stick three black buttons down the front. The orange card nose and twig arms do the rest.
Is this an official Olaf costume?
No. It is a homemade, unofficial costume inspired by the snowman in Frozen. Nothing here is official merchandise.
How do I do the stick arms without sewing?
Tape each twig inside the sleeve at the wrist and let it poke out past your hand. A few strips of brown tape hold it firmly.
Can I wear this in cold weather?
Yes, put thermals or a white fleece underneath. The padded middle helps keep you warm too.
Unofficial. Olaf and the Frozen names belong to their respective owners, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by them. The names are used only to describe this homemade parody costume.
Wear it in front of your own haunted CCTV
Upload four photos of your house and Cursed Cam turns them into a night-time security monitor where something is very wrong. Put it on the TV by the door.
