Miles Morales

A DIY Miles Morales costume is a black hoodie, black trousers, a black mask and a few red accents on the shoulders and chest. Draw a simple red spider on the front and wear your favourite sneakers. It costs about $15, takes under an hour and needs no sewing. Red lines on black show up well in a dark room or a photo.

What you need

• A black fitted hoodie or long-sleeved top
• Black leggings, joggers or trousers
• A black balaclava, face mask or tight black hood
• Red fabric tape or red felt strips
• Red fabric marker or felt for the spider
• Sneakers, with plain laces
• Black gloves, optional
• Scissors and double-sided tape

How to make it

   Put on the black top and trousers, then check the mask sits well over your head.

   Cut thin strips of red felt or tape and stick them across the top of each shoulder.

   Cut a few more strips and add them to the top half of the chest, running across the front.

   Draw a simple spider on the chest with a red fabric marker, or cut one from red felt and stick it on.

   Add a thin strip of red tape to the mask, above the eyes.

   Put on your sneakers and gloves, then check the red lines stay in place when you move.

   Strike a crouching pose on the sofa arm.

Make it better

• Lay the top flat when you stick the tape on, then wear it to check the lines.
• Keep the design simple. Red lines on black read well from across a room.
• Wear a plain black base layer under the hoodie so the colour does not show through.
