Lord Farquaad from Shrek
A DIY Lord Farquaad costume is mostly a red top, a red cape and a hat you make in ten minutes. Add black trousers, black boots, a dark bob wig and a belt with a big buckle, and you look like the short ruler of Duloc. Most of it comes from clothes you own, for about $25 and no sewing.
- TIME
- 90 min
- COST
- about $25
- SKILL
- Some cutting
What you need
- A red long-sleeved top or red sweatshirt for the tunic
- Black long-sleeved top to wear under it, so the sleeves show black
- Black trousers or leggings and black boots
- A red bedsheet, scarf or length of red fabric for the cape
- Red card or craft foam for the hat, plus a little white paper or card for the top
- A dark bob wig, or a bowl-cut style you do yourself
- Gold ribbon or gold craft tape, and a belt with a big gold-coloured buckle
- Red gloves, or red socks pulled over your hands
How to make it
- 1
Put the black top on first, then pull the red top over it. If the red top has sleeves, push them up to the elbow so black shows underneath. Or cut the sleeves off the red top.
- 2
Pin or tie the red fabric at your neck as a cape. A safety pin on each shoulder keeps it from slipping. Make it reach your calves.
- 3
Cut a strip of red card about 8 cm tall and long enough to wrap round your head. Tape it into a ring, with a little room to slide it on.
- 4
Cut a round piece of white card or paper about 5 cm wider than the ring, tape it on top as the hat top, then stick a feather or a cut paper plume to one side.
- 5
Stick gold ribbon around the hat band, down the front of the tunic, and along the edge of the cape.
- 6
Put on the black trousers and boots, then pull the belt over the tunic so the gold buckle sits at the front.
- 7
Pull on the wig and the red gloves. Take small, stiff steps and keep your chin up.
- 8
Practise a sniffy look in the mirror. The expression finishes the costume.
Make it better
- A red top that fits you slightly large looks more like a tunic than a tight one.
- Use double-sided tape to hold the gold ribbon on, so you can lift it off after the party.
- The bob should end sharply at the chin, so trim the wig dry before you wear it.
Questions
How do I make a Lord Farquaad costume from clothes I already own?
Start with a red top, black trousers and black boots. Add a red sheet as a cape, a belt with a big buckle and a hat made from card. The wig is the one thing you may need to buy.
How do I look short without a costume that does the work?
You cannot really shrink, so play it up. Stand with a proud chin, wear flat boots and take small, grand steps. Keep a very serious face.
Is this an official Lord Farquaad costume?
No. It is a homemade, unofficial parody costume built from everyday clothes and craft supplies. It is not affiliated with the film's makers.
What can I wear for a UK fancy dress party?
The same build works. Charity shops are a good place to find a red top, black boots and a belt for a few pounds.
Unofficial. Lord Farquaad and the Shrek names belong to their respective owners, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by them. The names are used only to describe this homemade parody costume.
Wear it in front of your own haunted CCTV
Upload four photos of your house and Cursed Cam turns them into a night-time security monitor where something is very wrong. Put it on the TV by the door.
