Link from The Legend of Zelda
A DIY Link costume is easy to build from a green top, brown belt and boots, a pointed green cap and a sword and shield cut from cardboard. It costs about $20, takes an hour and needs no sewing. The classic green tunic is the one most people picture, so start there for your fancy dress.
- TIME
- 60 min
- COST
- about $20
- SKILL
- Some cutting
What you need
- A green long-sleeved top, or a green tunic-style T-shirt, over a white or cream long-sleeved top
- A brown belt and brown boots
- A bunch of green felt for the cap, plus safety pins and tape
- Cream or white tights or leggings (optional)
- Cardboard and silver paint for the sword, with brown tape for the handle
- Cardboard, paint and brown tape for the shield
- A blonde wig or blonde hair, optional
How to make it
- 1
Wear the cream long-sleeved top, then the green top over it. Cinch the green top at the waist with the brown belt.
- 2
Add the brown boots, and fold the tops over slightly so they look worn.
- 3
Make the cap: lay a large triangle of green felt about 60 cm long, fold it in half and pin the long edge. Turn it right side out, with the point hanging behind your head.
- 4
Fit the cap by pinning it to a headband or tying a ribbon at the back of your head.
- 5
Cut a sword about 80 cm long from two layers of cardboard glued together. Paint it silver and wrap the handle with brown tape.
- 6
Cut a rounded shield about 45 cm tall from cardboard, paint it blue or brown with a simple border, and glue a strap on the back from folded card.
- 7
Strap the shield on your arm and slip the sword into the back of your belt.
Make it better
- Do not copy official symbols or artwork. A plain border and a simple shape is clearly homemade and just as good.
- Keep the sword blunt and light, with rounded corners.
- If you do not have a green top, a green hoodie with the hood down works for the same look.
Questions
How do I make a Link costume from clothes I already own?
Wear a green top over a cream long-sleeved shirt with a brown belt and boots. Add a green felt cap and a cardboard sword.
Is this an official Link costume?
No. It is a homemade, unofficial costume inspired by the hero of The Legend of Zelda. It uses no official merchandise.
Can I make the green cap without sewing?
Yes. Fold a triangle of felt, pin the edge and fix it on to a headband with tape or glue.
How do I carry the sword at a party?
Slide it into the back of your belt and keep it blunt. Take it off in crowded rooms.
Unofficial. Link and the The Legend of Zelda names belong to their respective owners, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by them. The names are used only to describe this homemade parody costume.
Wear it in front of your own haunted CCTV
Upload four photos of your house and Cursed Cam turns them into a night-time security monitor where something is very wrong. Put it on the TV by the door.
